Open Positions

Postdoctoral fellow, graduate research associate, and undergraduate student positions routinely become available, below is a listing of current opportunities.

Graduate Research Associate

We are looking for a UCSD Graduate Researcher Associate (GRA) to pursue basic research on the data stability and erasure of magnetic storage technologies. The research work is multidisciplinary, and will include a combination of theory, micromagnetic simulations, experimentation, and data analysis. Candidates from the UCSD Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Nanoengineering, as well as UCSD Program in Materials Science and Engineering will be considered for this position.

Please note that this position involves access to technology that is subject to U.S. export controls. Any job offer made will be contingent upon the applicant’s capacity to serve in compliance with U.S. export controls.

If you would like to be considered for this position, please submit your resume, curriculum vitae, and academic transcript to the principal investigator (Dr. Sergio A. Montoya; s1montoya@ucsd.edu) for consideration. All files should be submitted in a single PDF document.

Graduate Research Associate

We are looking for a UCSD Graduate Researcher Associate (GRA) to pursue basic research focused on developing and advancing numerical methods for modeling the static and dynamic properties of thin-film magnetic materials. The research work is multidisciplinary, and will include a combination of theory, micromagnetic simulations,  experimentation, and data analysis. Candidates from the UCSD Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics, as well as UCSD Program in Materials Science and Engineering will be considered for this position.

Please note that this position involves access to technology that is subject to U.S. export controls. Any job offer made will be contingent upon the applicant’s capacity to serve in compliance with U.S. export controls.

Undergraduate Student Researcher

We are looking for a motivated UCSD Undergraduate Student Researcher (USR) to aid experimentation and data analysis efforts on sanitization research of magnetic storage technologies (e.g., hard disk drives, magnetic tapes, etc.). The USR will primarily perform hands-on testing and characterization of data erasure devices using a wide range of data acquisition instrumentation, and aid designing, testing, and characterizing new sanitization apparatuses. As an USR, you will develop advanced and transferable experimental research skills, contribute to active research projects, and gain awareness of the research process.

This is a paid research apprenticeship opportunity, and therefore only candidates willing to commit, on average, 15-18 hours per week (in 3–4-hour work periods) should consider applying for this position; further, given the experimental nature of the anticipated research tasks, the USR will need to perform assigned work onsite. Salary rate will vary between $17.55/hour and $25.50/hour, depending on USR job duties and skills. Candidates from engineering, physics, and materials science background will be considered for this position; at the time of submission, the candidate should be at least in their Sophomore year at UCSD.

Please note that this position involves access to technology that is subject to U.S. export controls. Any job offer made will be contingent upon the applicant’s capacity to serve in compliance with U.S. export controls.

If you would like to be considered for this position, please submit your resume and academic transcript to the principal investigator (Dr. Sergio A. Montoya; s1montoya@ucsd.edu) for consideration.
